Pro Bono Award Presented to Baker & Daniels' Jon Laramore

11/23/2009

INDIANAPOLIS — Jon B. Laramore of Baker & Daniels LLP has been named the recipient of the Pro Bono Award for Attorney Aiding Entities by the Indianapolis Bar Association.

Laramore, the lead partner in the firm's appellate practice, and other award winners were honored at the IBA's annual recognition luncheon recently. In its announcement, the IBA credited Laramore with taking time to help entities work with other attorneys to increase pro bono aid for Indiana residents.

"As one of the most experienced appellate practitioners in the state of Indiana, Laramore teaches, writes and speaks frequently about the Indiana Constitution," the IBA announcement reported. "Laramore also coordinates Baker & Daniels’ participation in the federal Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals pro bono program, most often working with individuals who have been convicted of criminal charges. He also directs the firm’s pro bono projects for the Death Penalty Resource & Defense Center in South Carolina, which provides advocacy for capital defendants."

Locally, Laramore chairs the board of Horizon House, an organization serving the homeless community, and is on the board of the Damien Center, an organization serving central Indiana residents who have HIV/AIDS, the IBA statement said.

Laramore also created and now manages Indiana's appellate court pro bono program, which offers pro bono legal assistance in civil appeals. Such programs exist in only a handful of states, but through Laramore's leadership, Indiana's initiative has provided pro bono counsel to dozens of low-income appellate litigants over the last 30 months.

In addition to administering the state's appellate court pro bono program, Laramore represents clients. One representation involving a victim of domestic violence effectively changed how Indiana's trial courts administer protective orders in domestic violence cases.

Laramore is an elected member of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers, a national professional organization limited to 500 members. Founded in 1990, the academy promotes the improvement of appellate advocacy and the administration of the appellate courts.

Before joining Baker & Daniels, Laramore served as legal counsel to Indiana Governors Frank O'Bannon and Joseph E. Kernan.
